The Grand Duke Rutzinov is not permitted to marry opera singer Angele as she does not bear a title. He manages to convince the penniless Count Rene to marry a woman he will never see and divorce her in three months of a great sum of money which will give her a title and he can then marry her. They are married but separated by a cloth so they do not see the others face but when their hands touch they fall instantly in love. The Grand Duke is set in his plan and it looks hopeless for the young lovers who have never even laid eyes upon each other.
