Gabriel von Eisenstein has just been sentenced to eight days in prison for insulting an official. Gabriel’s friend, Falke, is looking for revenge on a series of practical jokes and convinces Gabriel to come to a ball and postpone prison for one day – he also manages to trick Gabriel’s maid into coming. When Rosalinde’s lover arrives at the same time as the police he allows himself to be taken to prison and pretends to be Gabriel.
