HMS Pinafore

5-9 April 1921, Empire Theatre Chelmsford

HMS Pinafore was to become the first show for Chelmsford Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (caods). It played at the Empire Theatre on Springfield Road (long since demolished) and was, by all accounts, a great success receiving ecstatic reviews from the local press.

HMS Pinafore is a comic opera by Gilbert & Sullivan that opened in 1878. Aboard the HMS Pinafore the Captain’s daughter, Josephine, is love with a lowly sailor called Ralph. Wishing to avoid her father’s choice of husband, Sir Joseph Porter, they plan to elope. But a shock reveal from Little Buttercup turns everything upside down.
