South Pacific
7 – 12 April 1997, Civic Theatre Chelmsford
South Pacific is another fantastic musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein that premiered in 1949. Nellie is a nurse on an American outpost during WWII and has fallen in love with a middle-aged plantation owner called Emile but is struggling to accept his half-Polynesian children. Meanwhile the rest of the Army lament the lack of women on the island. With romance, spy missions and the powerful story of acceptance this timeless musical is still very much loved. Many of the songs from the show are now standalone hits such as “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair”, “Some Enchanted Evening”, “There Is Nothing Like a Dame”, “Happy Talk” and “Younger Than Springtime”.
